Who runs this site

beeblog (bee.whoisjason.me) is run by me, Jason, as a personal project. I’m responsible for the data it collects. For anything about this policy or your data, email me at nations_pendant_0o@icloud.com.

When you read the site

Analytics (Rybbit)

The site uses Rybbit, an open-source analytics tool. I run my own copy of it at tracking.whoisjason.me, so what it collects goes to my server, not to an analytics company. For each page you visit, it records:

  • the page’s address (including anything after a “?” in it) and its title
  • the site that sent you here, if any
  • your browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language
  • your approximate location (country, region and city), which it works out from your IP address

It also records a few things you do on a page:

  • the label of a button you click, and links you follow to other sites
  • text you copy, up to its first 500 characters
  • which form fields you change and when you submit a form, but never what you type

Rybbit uses your IP address and browser details to tell one visitor from another, so I can see how many people read a post. It doesn’t set cookies. Its script saves a random ID in your browser’s local storage, but with this site’s settings that ID isn’t sent anywhere. Session recording is turned off. Rybbit isn’t connected to beeblog accounts, so its records don’t say who you are.

To opt out, block tracking.whoisjason.me with any content blocker. Everything on the site keeps working.

View counts

Each post has a simple counter of how many times it’s been read. Nothing about you is stored with it.

Server logs

Like any website, the servers that deliver this one see your IP address and browser details when you connect. These may be kept for a short time in server logs, which I use to fix problems and keep the site secure.

Pictures from other sites

When a commenter uses their Google, Discord or GitHub profile picture, your browser loads it from that company’s servers, which then see your IP address. The same goes for any image in a post that’s hosted on another site.

If you create an account

You only need an account to comment and to save posts.

What your account holds

  • your email address, username and display name
  • your profile photo, if you add one
  • your password, stored only as a secure hash: a scrambled form that nobody, me included, can turn back into the password
  • when you joined, and whether you’ve confirmed your email

Signing in with Google, Discord or GitHub

If you use one of these, it shares your name, email address and profile picture with beeblog. I also keep your account ID with that service and the sign-in tokens it issues, and nothing else. Their own privacy policies cover what they do. You can disconnect them from your account settings.

Sign-in records

Each time you sign in, the IP address and browser you used are saved with that sign-in session. The record is deleted when you sign out or delete your account. A session you stop using expires after 7 days.

Comments, saved posts and reports

Comments are public and show your username and photo. They’re reviewed before they appear. Your saved posts are private to you. If you report a comment, the report is linked to your account.

Emails

The site only emails you about your account: confirming your address, resetting your password, a welcome message, and security notices such as a changed password. There’s no newsletter or marketing. These emails are sent through my email provider.

Cookies and browser storage

  • Sign-in cookies keep you signed in. They’re only set once you sign in, and signing out removes them.
  • Theme: your light or dark choice, saved in local storage.
  • Rybbit’s ID: the random ID described above, saved in local storage.
  • Drafts: unsaved post drafts, saved in local storage. Only writers have these.

There are no advertising cookies and nothing that follows you to other sites.

Why I use your data

  • To run your account (signing in, comments, saved posts and account emails), because that’s the service you signed up for.
  • For analytics, sign-in records and server logs, because I have a legitimate interest in knowing what people read and in keeping the site secure. You can object to this at any time (see below).

Who else gets it

No one, except:

  • Google, Discord or GitHub, if you choose to sign in with them
  • my email provider, to deliver account emails

Nothing is sold, rented or shared for advertising. I’d only hand something over if the law required it.

Where it’s stored

The site, its database and Rybbit run on servers I own and run in the United States. If you’re outside the US, your data is transferred there.

How long it’s kept

  • Your account, comments and saved posts: until you delete them or your account.
  • Sign-in records: until you sign out or delete your account.
  • Analytics: for as long as it’s useful for comparing readership over time. It isn’t linked to your account.
  • Server logs: a short time, for troubleshooting.

Your choices and rights

  • Delete your account from Settings in your account. This removes your account, photo, comments, saved posts, reports and sign-in records straight away. Other people’s replies to your comments stay up.
  • See or correct your data: edit your profile in your account, or email me for a copy of everything the site holds about you.
  • Object to or limit how your data is used: email me.
  • Opt out of analytics: block tracking.whoisjason.me.

I’ll answer requests within a month. If you’re in the EU or UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

beeblog isn’t aimed at children. You need to be at least 16 to create an account.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. The terms of use cover the rest of the rules for using the site.
